Nov 1st I went into the barn to get a sack of feed and noticed the barn kitten running around and clearly excited. I glanced down to see a dark brown bird with very long legs running along the floor at great speed. I opened the main door of the barn and the bird exited, ran across the barnyard and down the trail towards the lake in mere seconds! I had never seen a bird like it so I immediately looked it up and discovered it was an immature Virginia Rail. Hopefully there is at least one breeding pair in the vicinity. Too bad I didn't have a camera - although I don't think the bird would have registered as more than a blur.
