Under development since 2000, the the Heritage Garden reminds us of early settlers on the island . The garden offers a living connection with the early homestead gardens of Cortes Island and reflects an aspect of the settlement history of Cortes.
The garden features plants grown prior to 1950 and has been developed with generous plant donations from local gardeners and homestead gardens.
Be sure to notice the memorial sundial, the cedar wheelbarrow and the hand carved decoration on the rose arbour.
Volunteers care for the garden, with drip irrigation and hay mulch helping to conserve water and control weeds. The plants in the garden are labelled with their common and botanical names. A brochure listing the plants in the Heritage Garden is available from the museum.
