Oyster Catcher on Cod Rock - Nancy Kendel
8th December 2005
CI Museum - Nancy Kendel
The Cortes Island Museum joins with Bird Studies Canada to invite birders and nature enthusiasts to take part in the 6th annual Cortes Island Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Bird Studies Canada is recognized nation-wide as a leading and respected, not-for-profit, conservation organization dedicated to the study and understanding of wild birds and their habitats.

On December 17, 2005 CBC participants will spend the day scanning seascapes and prowling back roads from Coulter Bay to Smelt Bay, binoculars, scopes, and bird books in hand. No prior birding experience is necessary.

In 1900, American ornithologist Frank Chapman asked birders across North America to go out on Christmas Day and count the birds in their home towns and submit the results as the first "Christmas Bird Census". Little did he know that this suggestion would create one of the biggest organized birding events in the world and a holiday tradition for over 50,000 birders each year.

Since 2000, Bird Studies Canada has coordinated the CBCs in this country, partnering with the National Audubon Society the original sponsor of the yearly event. The Christmas Bird Count fits very well with the mission of Bird Studies Canada, which is "to advance the understanding, appreciation and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, in Canada and elsewhere, through studies that engage the skills, enthusiasm and support of its members, volunteers, staff and the interested public."

If you are interested in participating in this year’s CBC either as a back yard feeder watcher or a count participant contact Ray or Nancy Kendel (250-935-8508) or nkendelisland.net to register. There is a $7 fee for count participants over 18 years of age, which covers the entrance fee, advertising and insurance costs. There is no fee for feeder watchers. An optional hot lunch will be available mid-day, and at the end of the afternoon we will gather at the museum to tally our observations over refreshments. Come have fun and learn about the feathered friends who share our wonderful Island and surrounding waters.
